On the Water

Overlooking Knight Inlet
Overlooking Knight Inlet in the Vancouver Island Region

When it comes to marine activities, few places in the world can rival the Vancouver Island region. The huge range of options, the outstanding quality of the experiences, and the jaw-dropping scenery — it’s a marine-activity paradise!

Kayaking, canoeing, boating, sailing, rafting, surfing, diving, windsurfing, and more are available year-round in spectacular freshwater and saltwater settings: serene lakes surrounded by pristine parkland, sparkling rivers that wind through lush valleys and forests, and the magnificent Pacific Ocean with its tree-covered islands and endless shorelines.

And what really makes marine activities in the Vancouver Island region exciting is that they are accessible to every skill level, from first-timers to expert thrill seekers and everyone in between.

KAYAKING

Kayaking in Haro Strait
Kayaking in Haro Strait, Vancouver Island

For several excellent reasons, kayaking is the most popular marine activity in the region. It’s easy to learn and affordable, appeals to all ages and ability levels, and has minimal effect on the environment. Plus, in the Vancouver Island region, you can kayak all year long almost anywhere you like: along shorelines, among islands and islets, in bays and coves, in fjords and inlets, in rivers and lakes, and even by moonlight. Under the guidance of a professional instructor, you will quickly learn the basics and, before you know it, you’ll be skimming along the surface of the water, taking in scenery you could never see from the shore. Tour options range from lessons and equipment rentals to multi-day tours and wildlife viewing excursions. Here are just a few of the most renowned kayaking areas:

Victoria/Sidney > Victoria’s Inner Harbour and Gorge Waterway, as well as Saanich Inlet, are popular with beginner and intermediate-level kayakers. From Sidney, kayakers paddle the waterways and among the islands that lead to Gulf Islands National Park, a paradise of islands, islets, reefs, and coastal parkland.

The Gulf Islands > Kayakers of all levels love these islands and paddle the protected waters along shorelines and in tranquil coves and bays. The Gulf Islands National Park Reserve is a particular favourite and covers 33 square kilometres on several islets, reefs, and islands.

Cowichan > Flatwater kayaking is big on the 34-km-long Cowichan Lake, as well as on Shawnigan Lake and Quennell Lake, which has several arms to explore.

Broken Group Islands > The numerous tiny islands that make up this group are world-renowned among kayakers; guided tours are recommended. Campsites are located on some islands. Accessible from Ucluelet or via freighter from Port Alberni.

Tofino and Clayoquot Sound > Clayoquot Sound is B.C.’s first UNESCO biosphere reserve. The area offers paddling in protected waters to rainforest estuaries, as well as more challenging paddling to open ocean beaches. Strong ocean-paddling skills required for outside areas; tours recommended.

Comox Valley and Baynes Sound > Calm waters, spectacular scenery, and abundant wildlife make this spot, as well as Denman and Hornby Islands, perfect for beginners.

Campbell River and Discovery Islands > Stunning scenery, sheltered waters, easy access, and many beautiful islands lead to the entrance of Desolation Sound. Strong tides in some areas, including Seymour Narrows.

Nootka Sound and Kyuquot Sound > Remote protected inlets and off-lying islands are accessible from Tahsis, Gold River, and Zeballos. Strong ocean-paddling skills required for outside areas.

Johnstone Strait > Kayakers paddle among the orcas as they cross the strait to the islands in the Broughton Archipelago. Access from Telegraph Cove, Port McNeill, and Alert Bay.

Quatsino Sound Area > Kayaking is popular in the sheltered waters of Neroutsos Inlet (Port Alice), Holberg Inlet, and Rupert Inlet that surround Quatsino. Quatsino Sound is a great kayaking route in itself; a campground is located in the estuary.

RIVER KAYAKING/RAFTING

Kayaking the Cowichan River
Kayaking the Cowichan River, Vancouver Island

Several rivers on Vancouver Island offer adventure to experienced whitewater kayakers. River rafting ranges from peaceful floats to rollercoaster rides and is especially exciting in the winter months when water levels increase.

Koksilah River > Located in the South Cowichan, this river is growing in popularity between November and May. Class I-II

Cowichan River > Experienced whitewater kayakers navigate rapids between Skutz Falls and Marie Canyon. Conditions are good year-round but best from October to June. Launch from Stoltz Pool day-use area. Class II-III

Chemainus River > Whitewater kayakers find challenges on several stretches of this river. Rain dependent; best between November and May. Class II-III

Puntledge River > A popular river that becomes more challenging depending on the season. The Puntledge River Paddle Festival is held here every May.
